Impact of Endocrine Disorders on IVF Outcomes: Results from a Large, Single-Centre, Prospective Study
2022
Abstract Endocrine disorders negatively influence the ovarian function, and increasing incidence of endocrine diseases with age may have further negative effects on pregnancy rate. Prospective cohort study of 231 consecutively enrolled patients underwent IVF treatment. In patients with known endocrine disorders, the laboratory parameters were corrected before IVF treatment. One hundred sixty one patients (69.7%) had at least one known and treated endocrine disorder (study group), and 70 patients were endocrine negative (control group). Endocrine disorders diagnosed were thyroid disorders (32.5%), diminished ovarian reserve (23.8%), insulin resistance (22.5%), PCOS (15.2%), hyperprolactinaem…
Assisted Reproductive Techniques and Risk of Congenital Heart Diseases in Children: a Systematic Review and Meta-analysis
2023
AbstractInfertility is a growing phenomenon and leads to an increased use of assisted reproductive techniques (ARTs). In recent years, concerns about the safety of these procedures emerged and ARTs were hypothesized to be a risk factor for developing congenital heart diseases (CHDs) in offspring. Our aim is to investigate the association between ART and CHD, specifying results according to various subtypes of defects. We performed a systematic review and random-effects meta-analysis following the PRISMA guidelines. MEDLINE and Google Scholar were searched from January 2011 to May 2022. Data about incidence of CHD in ART were tabulated and extracted from all the studies included. Twenty-four…
Impact of FIGO type 3 uterine fibroids on in vitro fertilization outcomes: A systematic review and meta‐analysis
2023
Background: The effect of FIGO (the International Federation of Gynecology & Obstetrics) type 3 myomas on in vitro fertilization (IVF) is uncertain. Objectives: To evaluate whether FIGO type 3 myomas affect IVF outcomes, through a systematic review and meta-analysis (CRD42022379700). Search strategy: Electronic databases were searched until November 15, 2022. Selection criteria: Studies evaluating the effects of FIGO type 3 myomas on IVF outcome. Data collection and analysis: Pooled results were expressed as odds ratios (OR) with 95% confidence intervals (CI). Heterogeneity was assessed using Higgins I2 . Sources of heterogeneity were explored with sensitivity and subgroup analyses. Mai…

Intrahepatic cholestasis of pregnancy after ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome with wild-type ABCB4 gene: a peculiar case and literature review
2023
Background: Intrahepatic cholestasis of pregnancy (ICP) in the first trimester occurring after ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS) is a rare condition and few cases are reported in the literature. Hyperestrogenism may explain this problem in genetically predisposed women. The objective of this article is to report one of these rare cases and offer an overview of the other published cases. Case presentation: We report a case of severe OHSS followed by ICP in the first trimester. The patient was admitted to the intensive care unit and was treated according to the guidelines for the management of OHSS. Moreover, the patient also received ursodeoxycholic acid for ICP, which brought to an i…
A Primary Evaluation of Potential Small-Molecule Inhibitors of the Astacin Metalloproteinase Ovastacin, a Novel Drug Target in Female Infertility Tre…
2020
Abstract Despite huge progress in hormonal therapy and improved in vitro fertilization methods, the success rates in infertility treatment are still limited. A recently discovered mechanism revealed the interplay between the plasma protein fetuin‐B and the cortical granule‐based proteinase ovastacin to be a novel key mechanism in the regulation of fertilization. Upon sperm–egg fusion, cleavage of a distinct zona pellucida component by ovastacin destroys the sperm receptor, enhances zona robustness, and eventually provides a definitive block against polyspermy. An untimely onset of this zona hardening prior to fertilization would consequently result in infertility. Physiologically, this proc…
Not So Much Societal: The Catholic Church in Poland as a Veto Player
2021
George Tsebelis distinguished two forms of veto players’ actions: institutional and partisan. In a democracy, the Church is not able to play either role because it is not an element of the state’s institutional structure. This was the source for Simon Fink’s proposal to look at the Church as a societal veto player (VP). The case of Poland shows, however, that such an approach becomes inadequate in numerous situations. The Church’s influence on political parties, and particularly the state’s institutions, may be exerted outside society. Performed on the basis of the existing literature and political debates conducted since 1989, the analysis of the social and political reality of Poland all…
Oxidative homeostasis in follicular fluid and reproductive outcomes – from bench to bedside
2022
Free radicals and oxidant molecules are part of our organism in a stable balance. However, when addressing female infertility, questions about their role in oocyte quality arise. This review outlines the major alterations of redox homeostasis in the follicular fluid through pathophysiological conditions in female reproduction and its potential effect on IVF outcome. A review of the literature was accurately performed. Manuscripts investigating follicular fluid biomarkers, especially related to oxidant molecules, were screened and used in this review. Studies assessing the follicular reactive species were found and screened. Moreover, studies assessing the IVF outcomes related to biomarkers …
Effects of different progesterone levels on reproductive outcomes in assisted reproductive technologies: from molecular basis to treatment strategies
2023
Purpose: The aim of this narrative review is to offer an overview about the role of progesterone levels on pregnancy outcome in patients undergoing assisted reproductive technologies (ARTs). Methods: A detailed computerized search of the literature was performed in the main electronic databases (MEDLINE, EMBASE, Web of Science) to determine the importance of elevated progesterone levels at different stages of the cycle for pregnancy rates in the in vitro fertilization (IVF) cycle. Our review also provides information on the differences between elevated progesterone levels and their interpretation in normal and in poorly responding women. Results: After careful evaluation, our search strateg…
Predictive Value of Basal Serum Progesterone for Successful IVF in Endometriosis Patients: The Need for a Personalized Approach
2022
The data regarding the role of progesterone (P4) in reproductive events of endometriosis patients are limited. This prospective study aimed to examine the predictive value of basal P4 serum levels for successful in vitro fertilization (IVF) in patients with primary infertility and endometriosis. The study included 73 patients divided according to endometriosis treatment (surgery vs. control—no treatment). The general data, basal hormonal status, and pregnancy rates were determined for every patient. Clinical pregnancy was achieved in 40.3% of patients, and more often in patients treated for endometriosis before IVF. The regression analysis showed that higher basal P4 serum levels were assoc…
